A few weeks ago I met Becky and her Mom at a craft show. I was starving and the smell of their amazing dip mixes and confectionaries kept wafting my way. I went over and purchased some goodies at lunch time and had to stop back before the end of the show to get more! Everything was amazing, and I can’t wait to try more of their delicious items!
S&S Country Delights is our featured seller for this week’s #SBS!
WW: Tell me about your business. Why did you start? When did you start?
Our business is S&S Country Delights. We are a small home based business ran by myself, Becky Simpson and my mom, Cathy Shearer. S&S Country Delights creates custom cakes, homemade baked goods, a variety of chocolates, fudge and a line of dip mixes. My mom and I have been baking and making candy for years. We started by going to a few craft shows and S&S Country Delights grew from there.
WW: What makes your product stand out from the competition?
S&S Country Delights strives to provide a quality products at a reasonable price. All of our products are made by just my mom and myself. The small size of our company allows us to deal with customers one on one and to provide exactly the item they are looking for. We specialize in custom orders and thrive on the challenge of creating exactly what our customer is looking for. Whether it be a custom one of a kind cake, the perfect favor for a bridal shower or a fundraiser that is just perfect for your organization, we can find something to fit their needs
WW:Does your business have a motto or mission? If so, what is it and how did you decide?
Our business motto is, “We bring homemade to your without you doing the work.” Many people in today’s busy world just don’t have the time or inclination to spend time in the kitchen. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have access to quality homemade product. S&S Country Delights allows everyone to have that great homemade taste without them having to do the work to get it.
WW: What advice would you give to others who want to start a small business?
I would advise other individuals starting out in their business to listen and be open to change. A business is an ever evolving thing. The items that were popular a few years ago are different from those today. Listen to what your customer wants. Don’t be afraid to add new items or change existing ones to meet your customer’s needs. For example, we got repeated requests for decorated cakes. I listened to what the customer wanted, took many cake decorating courses, and now S&S Country Delights offers custom cakes in addition to our other items.
WW: It’s tough being a small business owner. How do you manage your business time, free time, and home life?
Managing time, family and work is always a challenge. I have a husband and a 9 year old daughter, and they always come first. I try to utilize the time when they are at work and school to get my business work done. Fortunately, my daughter enjoys going to craft shows with us. So, I am able to spend time with her while I am working. At the same time, owning my own business give me the flexibility to work when I want. This allows me to volunteer at my daughter’s school, go on field trips and get to all of her sporting events.
WW: How has your business changed throughout the years?
S&S Country Delights changed quite a bit over the years. We used to just attend a few craft shows a year. Now we attend many more shows, take lots of custom orders, have our products in a few shops, make custom cakes and offer fundraisers.
WW: Who was your biggest business mentor?
My biggest mentor is probably my grandmother. I grew up with homemade baked goods. Store bought cookies were something we just never had. S&S Country Delights utilizes a lot of old fashioned recipes and techniques from my grandmother. We strive to provide the same quality product that we ate on a regular basis as I was growing up.
WW: What is your favorite marketing tool?
Facebook would have to be my favorite marketing tool. As a small business, we have next to no marketing budget. Facebook allows me to get events we are participating out there, post pictures of our product and update our customers with what is going on with S&S Country Delights.
WW: How do you see your business in 10 years?
I’m not sure where S&S Country Delights will be in 10 years. If the current trend continues, we will be making many more custom cakes and conducting more fundraisers. I hope to continue to grow and still provide a quality product.
