This week we are talking about Frankincense essential oil.
The kind that the Wise Men brought to Jesus at Christmas, right?
Modern day essential oil distillation was non-existent in biblical times. People of that era were likely to be using Frankincense resin – an aromatic solid resin that can be burned like incense. Definitely not the essential oil that we think of.
However, I do love to pull out Frankincense at Christmastime and you’ll see why in this weeks – 3 Ways Wednesday feature.

Frankincense Essential Oil
Latin Name(s): Boswellia frereana, boswellia carterii, Boswellia sacra, and Boswellia serrata (among other Boswellia species)
Distillation method: Steam distilled
Plant part: Gum Resin
Safety concerns: “skin sensitization if oxidized” (Tisserand and Young, Essential Oil Safety 2nd Edition. 2014)
Other concerns: There has been talk about some species of Frankincense species becoming extinct. (This is a handy article from NAHA about Frankincense and the possibility of it becoming extinct)
It is VERY important to know the source of the Frankincense you are buying – a BIG thumbs up if the company is FairTrade FairWild and/or ethically sourced. I’ll list a couple recommendations of places where you can buy Frankincense essential oil at the bottom of this post.
How can you use Frankincense?
#1 Opening Frankincense and Sweet Orange Kid’s Diffuser Blend
This DIY diffuser blend is useful when allergies or coughs are making you feel uncomfortable. It’s also great to use around kids! I love the paring of Frankincense and Sweet Orange essential oils – it’s a good blend of uplifting citrus and grounding Frankincense.
Add to a diffuser and use intermittently (on 15 minutes, off 30 minutes) .
#2 Soothing Frankincense Facial Oil
I’ve been using Frankincense on my face for several years now. It’s a lovely soothing oil and has a nice relaxing aroma. I like to pair it with other essential oils depending on what my skin needs at the moment. This recipe is easy and safe for most persons/skin types.
- Combine Rosehip seed oil and Frankincense fully in a 1 ounce amber bottle with a dropper
- Smooth several drops on face (avoid the eyes) as a moisturizer before bed and/or in the morning
#3 Spicy Christmas blend
I like this blend of essential oils as a non-traditional Christmas blend. It combines Frankincense, Siberian Fir, and Clove for a complex, spicy mix of essential oils. It is very deep and quite potent, but also very warm and inviting. This blend is not suitable for children due to the use of Clove.
- 20 drops Siberian Fir essential oil
- 10 drops Frankincense essential oil
- 5 drops Clove bud essential oil
- Combine all essential oils in a small amber bottle (an empty essential oil bottle will do)
- Use 2-3 drops of the blend in a diffuser
Remember – with this blend is potent, so a little goes a long way!
Where can I get “good” Frankincense?
